Candidate Qualifications:

 

We are looking for individuals who have successful experience in rural and Aboriginal communities, school-based leadership, can build on the current strengths of the school, and can work towards literacy and language improvement through common Division goals and initiatives.

 

  • Has experience with and a passion for promoting educational success for Aboriginal learners, especially in their indigenous language and culture. Fluency in the language and experience in the culture would be an asset.
  • Will work closely with the local school board committee and the community to build relationships in order to create a positive, inviting school environment that is integrated into the life of the community.
  • Will actively seek local partnerships to create innovative program opportunities to engage and challenge students and promote a sense of pride and accomplishment.
  • Is a strong instructional leader who will work with staff to ensure that students have high quality learning experiences.
  • Leads by example and is active in the life of the community.
  • Has a minimum of 5 successful years of teaching experience in rural and Aboriginal communities.

Athabasca Delta Community School is seeking candidates for a part-time (0.50 FTE) School Health Facilitator position for the 2018-2019 school year. The School Health Facilitator (SHF) will collaborate with key stakeholders to create a healthy school community. This 0.50 FTE position works with, and provides leadership to all members of the school community, including school administration, staff, students, parents, elders, school district staff, cultural leaders and other relevant community groups or individuals. The SHF uses a shared leadership model to plan and implement goals in partnership with all school community members. The individual chosen for this role should be prepared to support the needs of the school community for a minimum of one school year from September 2018 to June 2019. An understanding of local culture, supports and services is an asset.

 

The School Health Facilitator should possess, or be willing to learn, the following attributes:

  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders; e.g., students, parents, administration, elders, community leaders
  • Understanding of the existing health and wellness stakeholders in the school community
  • Knowledge of existing provincial policy, regional or local policies related to healthy eating and active living; e.g., School nutrition guidelines, District Priorities or Directives
  • Knowledge of current and local resources, supports, stakeholders related to Comprehensive School Health
  • Knowledge of current curricula related to healthy schools; e.g., Physical and Health Education
  • Confidence to present formally and informally to many stakeholders
  • Understanding of local culture and traditions
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong leadership, organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to organize and facilitate effective meetings
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and demonstrates strong initiative
  • Strong motivational, interpersonal and negotiation skills

 

Successful applicants will possess:

  • Undergraduate degree or certification in Health Promotion, Nutrition, Physical Education, Recreation, Education, Health Education or related area (preferred but not required)
  • Experience in health promotion, education, physical activity or nutrition education would be an asset
  • Experience working with K – 12 children in schools would be an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to engage in relationships at the individual, familial and community levels is preferred
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity

Athabasca Delta Community School is located in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta and the Grade K-12 school offers instruction to approximately 250 students.  The school requires two part-time (20 hours per week, variable days and hours) Student Support Coordinators.

 

The successful applicant will act as a resource and provide a liaison between fire impacted youth & families, the school system and community/ regional resources to improve parent/school/community communications, and the child’s social, physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing and in-school functioning. The primary focus is to provide direct, early intervention strategies through school planning, goal setting, Indigenous programming, safety training (fire, first aid, etc.), counselling, workshops, etc. with the school and other agencies.

 

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, patient and have a love of children and youth. Other qualifications include:

  • Experience working with children, families and schools;
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and works well independently;
  • CPR/First Aid Certificate;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (including presentations);
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to support and work effectively with young people;
  • Grade 12 or equalivalent;
  • Good organizational and computer skills;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  • Valid driver’s license;
